A man who gave up on love
Mitch Bradford is an intimidating man. In his professional life, he has a reputation for demolishing his opponents in the courtroom. At the exclusive BDSM club Sanctum, he prefers disciplining pretty submissives with no strings attached. In his line of work, there’s no time for a healthy relationship. After a few failed attempts, he knows he’s not good for any woman—especially not his best friend’s sister.
A woman who always gets what she wants
Laurel Daley knows what she wants, and her sights are set on Mitch. He’s smart and sexy, and it doesn’t matter that he’s a few years older and has a couple of bitter ex-wives. Watching him in action at work and at play, she knows he just needs a little polish to make some woman the perfect lover. She intends to be that woman, but first she has to show him how good it could be.
A killer lurking in the shadows
When an unexpected turn of events throws the two together, Mitch and Laurel are confronted with the perfect opportunity to explore their mutual desire. Night after night of being close breaks down Mitch’s defenses. The more he sees of Laurel, the more he knows he wants her. Unfortunately, someone else has their eyes on Laurel and they have murder in mind.
Mitch is a sexy as hell Dom who wants complete control from his sub and doesn't settle for less. He's also carting around a mountain of baggage from his past, mostly a neglectful mother and two dismal failures of a marriage. So when sweet Laurel Daley makes it clear that she wants him, he knows that the best thing he can do for her is to stay away. He feels like he has nothing to offer in a real relationship and that he's doomed to fail in that respect. All of his insecurities do make him act in an infuriating manner at times, and I definitely found myself wanting to give him a good shake now and again. However the author does a very good job of making us understand why he acts as he does and I found it very easy to empathise with him.
Laurel is a total sweetheart but she's also very stubborn and persistent. Her patience with Mitch was very impressive and I liked that she was able to compromise without being a doormat. She had a rough childhood which helps her understand Mitch more than others might, which gives her the patience she needs to break through his walls.
I loved Laurel and Mitch as a couple. I thought they had a super hot chemistry and there were definitely scenes that made me fan myself. I also loved seeing them grow closer and the moments when Mitch's guard was down and he could be himself with Laurel. He was so sweet in these moments.
Overall, this is a well fleshed out novella with plenty of steamy scenes and a suspenseful element that keeps you guessing. It also reads really well as a stand alone. It's part of a series and it's clear that many of the characters featured in this book have their own stories, but it's not something that distracts from Mitch and Laurel's romance.
*I received a review copy, for my honest opinion. Thank you!
