Lady Sarah's Sinful Desires (Secrets at Thorncliff Manor #1)
Author: Sophie Barnes
Release Date: 28 April 2015
Welcome to Thorncliff Manor, where London's elite mix, mingle, and may even find their heart's desire...
There are thousands of things Christopher, Viscount Spencer, would rather do than hunt for a bride, especially since experience has taught him that women are not to be trusted. Then he finds the intriguing Lady Sarah scrambling around in Thorncliff's conservatory and he is instantly charmed by her passionate nature. But why is she so intent on avoiding him?
Lady Sarah would make the perfect bride for a peer—if not for a tarnished past that she's hiding from the ton. A stay at Thorncliff Manor was meant to help her plan for her future, not fall in love. Yet Christopher's kisses are irresistible, his gallantry enticing. When her secret stands to be revealed, will the truth ruin their dreams of happiness?
Lady Sarah has a secret. A secret that means her life is practically over and her parents treat her like their shameful secret. Of course Sarah's secret isn't as terrible as it seems to her and her family, but it still acts as a dark cloud constantly hanging over her. It's also why she agrees to marry an utterly vile man much older than her. When Sarah's away from her parents and the other watchful eyes of society, she's free to be herself and she's outspoken and lively. She's very sweet and kind, but perhaps a bit too kind. I thought Sarah was a lovely heroine and I wanted her to be happy throughout the story, but I do wish she had just stood up for herself more and earlier. I wanted her to stop taking crap from people and just find her own way in life. Not an easy thing, I know, but something that I wanted her to do.
Christopher is a Viscount and has found in the past that his title can attract entirely the wrong sort of woman. Since his heart has been bruised, he's happy to put off marriage for as long as he possibly can, no matter how much his family try to persuade him otherwise. Christopher slowly learns to trust in Sarah as their friendship builds and it definitely heals those old wounds. Christopher could be so sweet and protective of Sarah at times. He's funny and kind once he breaks out of his initial dourness with Sarah. Unfortunately he majorly lets himself down with his attitude towards Sarah once he learns of her secret. I guess it's not entirely surprising since he's shocked by her revelation and it reminds him too much of his past experiences with women, but the dude could have been more understanding. He comes around soon enough, but it wasn't quite soon enough for me. Don't get me wrong, I still thought Christopher was a great hero, I just wish that his reaction had been different.
I really enjoyed Christopher and Sarah's slow building relationship. Immediately he's wary of her and she wants to keep him at arms length, but circumstances (his sisters) continually push them together. Soon they develop a friendship which blooms into a steady and sweet romance.
There are so many aspects of the story that I loved; the sweet and slow romance, the opulent surroundings of Thorncliff Manor and Christopher's loving and large family. I think the premise for the series is a great one, and I just wish Thorncliff Manor was a real place I could visit! I also thought Throncliff Manor's owner, Lady Duncaster, was just fabulous. I'm particularly intrigued to read Richard's (Chrisopher's brother) story since I can never resist the tortured hero type! This is a lovely start to what I hope will be a wonderful series from Sophie Barnes.
*I received a review copy for my honest opinion. Thank you!
