Echoes (Harp Security #1)
Author: Laura K. Curtis
Release Date: 17 March 2015
Who is she?
A single photo of herself as an infant on a beach, taken before the date on her birth certificate, throws everything Calliope Pearson knows about herself into question. Hoping to find answers, she takes advantage of her job as a travel writer to make a reservation at the Caribbean island resort in the picture.
Resort security chief Mac Brody distrusts Callie on sight. After all, she looks exactly like his deceitful missing wife, Nikki, who owns half the resort. But when Nikki’s found dead, Mac's facing murder charges, and he’s sure that Callie must hold the key to proving his innocence.
The deeper Callie and Mac dive into the mystery of her past, the more bodies surface. And they’ll have to learn to trust each other, or become victims of a dark danger neither could've imagined…
After her father dies, Callie discovers a photo of herself taken when she was just a baby at a Caribbean resort. Except the photo is dated for before she was born. Curious about the photo and determined to find answers, Callie books into the same resort under the guise of writing a travel article, but she has a strange welcome when it turns out she uncannily resembles the missing owner.
Before she knows it, Callie is thrust into a life or death situation as it becomes apparent that she's tangled up in a web larger than she could have imagined. With Mac, the resort security chief and husband to the missing owner, she becomes embroiled in a fight for the truth and her life.
Callie lives a relatively uneventful life before she arrives on the island of St. Martin's. She's quietly intelligent and maintains a calm facade, even under the stressful situations she undergoes through the story. I so enjoyed that Callie is a sensible heroine who isn't too stubborn or proud to accept help when it becomes clear she's in over her head, instead she works with Mac and Harp security.
Mac is kind of a dick to Callie at first. His soon-to-be-ex-wife goes missing and then Callie turns up who looks so similar to her, he's unsurprisingly suspicious and mistrustful of Callie. As Mac gets to know Callie, his protective instincts come out around her which is really sweet. He's ex-army and an ex-cop so he's strong and resourceful, definitely someone you want on your side. He's sexy and pretty much a badass, but he's also patient and caring with Callie as they get plunged further into danger.
Callie and Mac's romance is complicated to say the least. Firstly, there's the possibility that she's related to his wife. Mac and Nikki are pretty much estranged but it's still a little close for comfort. Then there's the whole shebang with Nikki's murder and the mystery they start to unravel as a result. But they become closer and their attraction grows as they work together to figure out what the heck is going on. They had a pretty sizzling chemistry, although Callie is understandably worried that the attraction for Mac is kind of adrenaline-based since he's an admitted adrenaline junkie and they have spent most of their relationship on the run trying not to be killed.
The plot is rather intricately weaved and I enjoyed that we were given the answers piece by piece until we get the full picture later in the story. I did sometimes feel that it was a bit too convoluted and a lot going on at once, but I pretty much followed it most of the time.
Overall, this is a gripping romantic suspense story that definitely grabs your attention. I'm very intrigued to read more from the series after being introduced to several member of Harp security in this book.
